Heath, Ohio

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to travel to Heath, Ohio to preach in a Sunday Morning service. The pastor there is an old friend of mine named Noel Dear. First Baptist Heath really got a heart for orphans last year after a trip to Kenya. They have implemented a very strategic partnership with a Kenyan church that is reaching out to the local orphans.

We had a great response after I shared. Several of the families are now thinking about adoption. Did you know that there are 125,000 children right now, in the United States, that are considered "legally free for adoption." That term does not refer to how much it costs to adopt these children - rather it refers to the fact that there is nothing legally hindering them from being adopted. In other words - they have no legal parents. A judge has terminated the rights of their parents for one reason or another. Most states refer to these as foster care adoptions since the children are in the custody of the foster care system until an adoptive home is found for them.

Many of these kids are older or are in sibling groups. Therefore, it is much more difficult for them to be adopted. Ohio has the 5th highest number of children in this category (right behind my state of Florida).

I digress... I was especially glad to have my oldest son, Jared, travel with me to Heath. He really wanted to see and play in snow. When we landed on Saturday the weather was terrible with freezing rain. They then predicted very cold but clear weather on Sunday. However, it snowed all afternoon Sunday and Jared got his wish! Heath is also known as the home of Longaberger Baskets. The 'highlight' of the trip was doing a drive-by of the headquarters that looks like a big basket.

Keep praying for First Baptist Heath that God would raise up leaders to take an Orphan Care and Adoption ministry and challenge their church to be intentional in these areas. There are far to many children waiting for a home for the Church in America to be satisfied!

Thanks to Noel, Donna, their girls, and the FBC Heath family for a great visit!

the Longaberger Headquarters - I can't believe that was the highlight of your "guys trip" too funny.

Your job is too cool. I know it is not perfect as there is so much travel away from home. But sharing your energy and passion with other churches - how could they not want to jump in with both feet.
